What did we do before the days of cellphones, iPads and internet? What did we do before we had limitless information at our fingertips with a simple click of a button? How did we entertain ourselves and stay in-touch with others without social media? It's hard to remember life before modern technology took over. But here I am with my laptop on my lap and I'm bored with nothing to do.
I have a few websites I like to visit every day, some with news others with technology news. I have a few social media platforms I use to keep in touch with friends and family which I check throughout the day. I occasionally check some of the local and national news sites to see what is going on in the world. I have a few other sites I visit occasionally, but I'm bored with nothing to do.
As a child I would rather have spent most of my free time outdoors, on my rollerblades or playing soccer with my friends. We had a Nintendo Entertainment System, but we were not allowed to spend hours playing games. We also had a computer, a Commodore 64, which I spent hours programming new games, but we were also not allowed to spend hours playing with it. School took up a lot of my time as did homework, but I always found something to do with my spare time.
Now I'm 44 years old, sitting on my own couch in my own home watching old TV shows on my own TV and surfing the internet on my own laptop, but I'm bored witht nothing to do! I have already browsed my favorite websites for the day, read and responded to emails, deleting the majority as spam or junk mail, and checked my social media sites. But what do I do now? My 7-year-old is playing games and watching YouTube videos on his own iPad, completely uninterested in playing outside or playing with his dad. School is out for summer, so apart from the occasional trip to therapy, he spends most of his time on his iPad watching Santa on YouTube.
As I write this, I sit watching old TV shows such as The Adams Family and The Twilight Zone on my Amazon Prime on my Smart TV. I browse Ebay looking for nostalgic items such as old computers and 80's technology. A laptop from the early 90's which I owned is now selling for $500 - $1,000. I have boxes of old computer parts in my basement which I could now sell for thousands of dollars. My first personal computer, which I was given for my birthday, is selling for $400. But I'm still bored.
I have limitless information at my fingertips, access to news from all over the world and as much TV as I could watch with a simple click of a button and I'm bored. I have a truck in the driveway which I could drive anywhere I wante to, but I'm still bored. I have a basement full of tools which I could use to build anything I wanted to, but I'm still bored. How did we get to where we have so much we could do and still be bored?
