I fell and broke my shoulder. I should have known better than to run down a slippery, wet, hill. Needless to say, it didn't end well. A trip to the ER revealed I had broken the proximal end of my right humerus. They gave me a splint and told me to see an orthopedic surgeon. A week later at my first appointment, I was told I needed surgery, but also needed a CT scan to get a better look. 3 weeks later, after the CT and at my followup appointment, I was told we should just leave it and see what happens. From the X-Ray and CT it looked pretty bad, so I didn't understand why they just wanted to leave it and see how it healed on its own. So I decided to get a second opinion.
After getting a second opinion from a shoulder specialist, I was told that to obtain the best outcome and to restore the most range of motion and strength I would need surgery. I was scheduled for surgery less than a week later. My range of motion before surgery was very limited. I was not able to raise my arm more than about an inch or so before it felt like bone was hitting bone. And the pain was something awful.
Day of surgery started off early. I had to be there by 5:30am for 7am surgery. Nothing to eat since about 7pm the previous day. They started an IV and game me some Versed so they could insert the catheter for the nerve block. I didn’t really feel anything, but it was a very long catheter and they used ultrasound to guide them to the nerve. Once the nerve block was done, they ook me back to the OR. The anesthiologist said I woud start feeling sleepy and that's all I remember.
Fast forward about 4 hous and I woke up in the recovery area. I don't remember much from that point. I don't even remember the drive home.
It has been 2 weeks now and things are healing nicely. The stitches were removed and I'm finally ale to take a proper shower. I still have to wear the sling and can't move my shoulder. Its hard to do everything with your non-dominant hand. Should be back to work with light-duty in 2 weeks sand be out of the sling in 4 weeks. Physical therapy started last week, but I'm not doing much yet. The dr. said he wants to take it slow because there had been a month from the injury to the surgery. Wish I had gone to a shoulder specialist in the first place and I would havev been a month ahead.
